1️⃣ Type 1: Pipes Opened Alternately (बारी-बारी से पाइप खोलना) 🔄
Sometimes pipes aren't opened together from the start. Instead, Pipe A runs for the first hour, Pipe B for the second hour, and they keep alternating until the tank is full.
Pipe A can fill an empty tank in 20 hours, and Pipe B can empty the full tank in 30 hours. If both pipes are opened alternately for 1 hour each, starting with Pipe A, in how many hours will the tank be completely filled?
📐 Step-by-Step Solution |
Step 2: Pipe A's efficiency = 60 ÷ 20 = +3 units/hr Pipe A
Step 3: Pipe B's efficiency = 60 ÷ 30 = -2 units/hr Pipe B
Step 4: Net work per 2-hour cycle (A then B) = (+3) + (-2) = +1 unit every 2 hours 2-घंटे के चक्र (A फिर B) में कुल कार्य = (+3) + (-2) = +1 इकाई प्रति 2 घंटे
Step 5: After 57 complete cycles = 57 × 2 = 114 hours, the tank holds exactly 57 units — safely below the 60-unit capacity, so no cycle has overflowed yet.
Step 6: The 115th hour is Pipe A's turn again. It needs to add only 3 more units (57 → 60), and at +3 units/hr, that takes exactly 1 hour.
Total Time = 114 + 1 = 115 hours
Never assume the last "partial" hour belongs to whichever pipe you feel like — always check whose turn it actually is in the cycle (odd hour → A, even hour → B) before computing the final leftover time.
2️⃣ Type 2: One Pipe Closed After a Certain Time
A common variation: a tank starts filling with multiple pipes together, but one of them is closed after a fixed duration, and the rest continue alone.
Two pipes P and Q can fill a cistern in 12 minutes and 15 minutes respectively. Both are opened together, but after 3 minutes, pipe P is closed. In how much total time will the cistern be filled?
Solution:
• Total Capacity = LCM(12, 15) = 60 units
• P's efficiency = 60 ÷ 12 = +5 units/min
• Q's efficiency = 60 ÷ 15 = +4 units/min
• Work done by (P + Q) together in first 3 minutes = (5 + 4) × 3 = 27 units
• Remaining work = 60 - 27 = 33 units
• Time for Q alone to finish the remaining 33 units = 33 ÷ 4 = 8.25 minutes (8 min 15 sec)
🎯 Total Time = 3 + 8.25 = 11.25 minutes (11
Students often divide the remaining work by the combined efficiency instead of switching to only the pipe(s) still open. Once P closes, only Q's rate applies to the leftover work.
3️⃣ Type 3: Efficiency & Diameter Ratio Variations (दक्षता और व्यास अनुपात पर आधारित प्रश्न) ⚖️
Advanced problems often compare the internal diameters or efficiency ratios of pipes. For pipes of the same length and material, and assuming the flow velocity (pressure) is the same in each, the water discharge rate (efficiency) is directly proportional to the square of the internal diameter (Efficiency ∝ d²).
Two pipes A and B have internal diameters in the ratio 1 : 2, and both run at the same flow velocity. If both are connected to a tank separately, find the ratio of the time each would take to fill it alone.
📐 Step-by-Step Solution |
Step 1: Efficiency ratio
Discharge (Efficiency) ∝ d² (same velocity assumed)
Ratio of efficiencies (EA : EB) = 1² : 2² = 1 : 4
Step 2: Time ratio
Since time is inversely proportional to efficiency (Time ∝ 1/Efficiency):
Ratio of time taken (TA : TB) = 1/1 : 1/4 = 4 : 1
🎯 Final Answer / अंतिम उत्तर: Ratio of time taken = 4 : 1
Don't confuse diameter ratio with time ratio directly. Square the diameter ratio to get efficiency, then invert it to get time — skipping either step gives a wrong answer.
📝 Quick Recap of Part 2 | Part 2
|---|---|
| Alternate Pipes / बारी-बारी से पाइप | Find net work per full cycle, add cycles until just below total capacity, then work out the final partial turn using whichever pipe is actually due next. |
| Pipe Closed After a Fixed Time / निश्चित समय बाद पाइप बंद | Subtract the work done during the joint period, then divide the remaining work by the efficiency of only the pipe(s) still running. |
| Efficiency & Diameter Ratios / दक्षता और व्यास अनुपात | Square the diameter ratio to get the efficiency ratio (assuming equal flow velocity: Efficiency ∝ d²), then invert it to get the time ratio (Time ∝ 1/Efficiency). |
