Hey Aspirants! 👋
Pipe and Cistern is a direct extension of Time and Work, and it shows up almost every year in Bank, SSC, and Railway exams. The underlying concept is still "efficiency" — how much work is done per hour — while the LCM method is simply a shortcut that turns fractions into whole numbers. Remember this one rule and you're halfway there: an Inlet pipe adds work to the tank (treat it as positive), while an Outlet or Leak removes work from the tank (treat it as negative). Let's build that foundation in Part 1! 🚰
Pipe and Cistern, Time and Work

| Core Terms 🌊
Before jumping into formulas, get comfortable with these two building blocks — every Pipe and Cistern question is just a combination of them.
| Type of Pipe / पाइप का प्रकार | Function / कार्य | Sign in Calculation / गणना में चिह्न |
|---|---|---|
📥 Inlet Pipe → Tank: water flows IN, work is added (+)
📤 Outlet / Leak → Water flows OUT, work is removed (−)
2️⃣ Golden Rule & LCM Method |
Whenever it's convenient, assume the tank's total capacity to be the LCM of the times taken by the pipes involved. This single trick converts every fraction into a clean whole number, so the rest of the calculation becomes pure addition and subtraction.
Two pipes, A and B, can individually fill a tank in 30 hours and 45 hours respectively. If both pipes are opened together in an empty tank, how long will it take to fill it completely?
📐 Step-by-Step Solution |
Step 2: A's efficiency = 90 ÷ 30 = +3 units/hrA
Step 3: B's efficiency = 90 ÷ 45 = +2 units/hrB
Step 4: Combined efficiency = 3 + 2 = +5 units/hr
🎯 Final Answer / अंतिम उत्तर: Time = 90 ÷ 5 = 18 hours (घंटे)
3️⃣ Leakage Concept (Outlet) & Combined Rate |
This is where most students slip up. When an inlet and a leak act together, their combined rate is simply the inlet's positive rate plus the leak's negative rate — never subtract them as two positive numbers. Keeping the sign attached to each pipe throughout the calculation is what keeps the answer correct.
⚖️ Inlet + Outlet Together — the tank fills only at the net rate
Pipe A alone can fill a tank in 10 hours. Because of a leak at the bottom, it now takes 15 hours to fill the same tank. Find the time the leak alone would take to empty a full tank.
Solution:
• Total Capacity = LCM(10, 15) = 30 units
• (A + Leak) combined efficiency = 30 ÷ 15 = +2 units/hr
• A's efficiency alone = 30 ÷ 10 = +3 units/hr
• Leak's efficiency = (A + Leak) − A = 2 − 3 = −1 unit/hr (the negative sign confirms it empties the tank)
🎯 Time taken by the leak alone to empty the tank = 30 ÷ 1 = 30 hours (घंटे)
4️⃣ Multiple Pipes on One Tank |
The same sign rule scales up to three, four, or even more pipes acting together. Simply add every inlet's efficiency and subtract every outlet's efficiency — the net result tells you the tank's true filling (or draining) speed.
🚿 Same sign rule with more pipes — just add every inlet, subtract every outlet
⭐ Trick 1 — Direct Formula:
If an inlet pipe A fills a tank in 'x' hours and an outlet pipe B empties it in 'y' hours (with y > x), then the net time to fill the tank with both open together is:
Net Time = (x × y) ÷ (y − x)
⭐ Trick 2 — Sign Discipline:
Always attach a minus (−) sign to every outlet or leak pipe the moment you write down its efficiency. This one habit alone eliminates most silly mistakes in Pipe and Cistern problems.
