Problem for Demonstration |

Q. A man has some hens and some cows. If the total number of Heads = 48 and the total number of Feet = 140, find the total number of hens.

(A) 22          (B) 18          (C) 26          (D) 20
⚡ 3-Second Universal Shortcut Formula:
• 4-Legged Animals (गायों की संख्या) = (Total Feet / 2) − Total Heads = (140 / 2) − 48 = 70 − 48 = 22
• 2-Legged Animals (मुर्गियों की संख्या) = Total Heads − 4-Legged = 48 − 22 = 26

Method 1: Assume All Animals Have 2 Feet (Hens) |

Step 1: Calculate Assumed Feet |

English: Assume for a moment that all 48 animals present are hens (2-legged animals). Since each hen has exactly 2 feet, the total assumed feet would be: 48 × 2 = 96 feet.

Step 2: Calculate Feet Discrepancy |

English: Now compare the actual feet given in the problem statement with our assumed feet calculation: 140 (Actual Feet) − 96 (Assumed Feet) = 44 extra feet.

Step 3: Assign Extra Feet to 4-Legged Animals (Cows) |

English: Why did we get 44 extra feet? Because every cow actually has 4 feet, which is 2 feet more than a hen (4 − 2 = 2 extra feet per cow). Distribute the surplus: 44 ÷ 2 = 22 Cows.

Step 4: Find the Total Number of Hens |

English: Subtract the number of cows from the total number of heads: Total Heads (48) − Total Cows (22) = 26 Hens.

Method 2: Assume All Animals Have 4 Feet (Cows) |

Step 1: Calculate Assumed Feet |

English: In this alternate approach, assume that all 48 animals are cows (4-legged animals). Total assumed feet = 48 × 4 = 192 feet.

Step 2: Calculate Feet Discrepancy |

English: Find the surplus by subtracting the actual feet from the assumed feet: 192 (Assumed Feet) − 140 (Actual Feet) = 52 surplus feet.

Step 3: Direct Computation of 2-Legged Animals (Hens) |

English: For every single hen present, we mistakenly counted 2 extra feet (since a hen has only 2 feet, but we assumed 4 feet). Divide the excess feet by 2: 52 ÷ 2 = 26 Hens.

(Option C)
💡 Exam Strategy Insight (परीक्षा रणनीति):

If the exam asks for 2-legged animals (hens/ducks), use Method 2 (assume all are 4-legged) to get the answer in one single step without doing subtraction at the end! Conversely, if the question asks for 4-legged animals (cows/goats), use Method 1 for a direct 1-step solution.

Bonus Variation: Biscuits Instead of Feet | बोनस सवार: बिस्कुट वाला Variation

Q. There are two types of animals in a room, some are cats and some are dogs. Each cat takes 7 biscuits and each dog takes 9 biscuits. If 355 biscuits are eaten by 45 animals, find the number of cats and dogs.

(A) 25, 20          (B) 20, 25          (C) 10, 35          (D) 5, 40
Step 1: Assume All Animals are Cats (7 Biscuits) |

English: Assume all 45 animals are cats. Since each cat eats 7 biscuits, the total assumed biscuits = 45 × 7 = 315 biscuits.

Step 2: Calculate Biscuit Discrepancy |

English: Compare actual biscuits eaten with assumed biscuits: 355 (Actual) − 315 (Assumed) = 40 extra biscuits.

Step 3: Assign Extra Biscuits to Dogs |

English: Each dog actually eats 9 biscuits, which is 2 biscuits more than a cat (9 − 7 = 2 extra per dog). Distribute the surplus: 40 ÷ 2 = 20 Dogs.

Step 4: Find the Number of Cats |

English: Subtract dogs from the total animals: Total Animals (45) − Dogs (20) = 25 Cats.

✅ Correct Answer / सही उत्तर = 25 Cats, 20 Dogs (Option A)

⚡ 3-Second Universal Shortcut Formula (Biscuit Version):
• Dogs (9-वाले) = (Actual Total − Total Animals × Smaller Rate) / (Rate Difference) = (355 − 45×7) / 2 = 40/2 = 20
• Cats (7-वाले) = Total Animals − Dogs = 45 − 20 = 25

🏠 Homework Challenge |

Q. A farmer has some ducks and some goats. If the total number of Heads = 54 and the total number of Feet = 176, find the total number of ducks.

(A) 20          (B) 18          (C) 22          (D) 26
